Parco dei Principessa

Roma, Italy, Wednesday 23 September

I have become an uptown girl. I have moved to the rather select suburb of Parioli. I know this because my room at the Parco dei Principe has a foyer. My bed is a king plus. There are three layers of curtaining and I have an outside balcony. There is also a small bottle of ‘Intimate Cleanser’, in a discreet little shelf above the bidet!!!(if you are interested in more detail on this, sorry, I don’t intend touching it). I also know I am in a grand hotel because the lighting is dimmer…consequently I have lost 10 years in under an hour, I look fantastic; perhaps that is why I have three mirrors with baroque style frames dotted about the place! And all I can hear is a gentle hum of air conditioning and my fingers tapping on the keyboard. It is much too quiet. I miss my shutters already.

From here the buzz of downtown is supposedly between a 10 and 20 minute stroll away, depending on which literature you read (I will test that tomorrow), and is the reward of a walk through the lovely Borghese Gardens - the largest green belt I can see on the city map. I have been across to explore these already, they are formal ie architectural, and pretty. Also the park is home to the Borghese Gallery…apparently some special art in here for me to enjoy in the next couple of days, one of the several reasons I’ve moved accommodation. Another is I am here on a 4 nights for 3 deal, saving myself the princessly sum of three hundred plus kiwi bucks. And perhaps the most important - this place has that rare Roman treat, a pool. Today’s temp is again high 20’s so I expect to use this sooner rather than later. Oh and there is a spa…how could I forget to tell you that. So far I have learned that there are “12 cabins for multi sensual experiences” and “emotional showers” (!?!) I do hope spa in Italian means the same as it does in English; one could be excused for having just a little doubt!

  1. ahhhh Suzanne - I'm not sure how many more days I will be able to track your adventures - with such sights and experiences relayed with such wonderfully evocative writing, life in Welly with a high of 9 degrees today looks decidedly ordinary and I don't know how long I will bear the comparisons. Is it too late to join you??

Of course it is quite exciting here really - news today of John Key meeting Barack Obama 'spontaneously' at a cocktail party (or something) - surely that gives me only 3 or 4 degrees of separation now... Meanwhile the country holds its breath for John not to make a complete dick of himself and the country on the Letterman show tonight.

Keep up the posts - if not to be in reality, the fantasy of escape to your world for some moments is worthy! Deb x

  2. Ah sometimes the grass just feels greener I am sure. Although it is pretty green here, the sprinklers and gardners are working overtime in the pool area:-) Dying to hear about the Leno interview and do keep me in touch with the big news, don't want ot miss out now.
